Tomas Jurcik, PhD

Registered Psychologist

Director and Owner of Health and Balance Counselling

I am a clinical psychologist registered with the College of Psychologists British Columbia (CPBC #2158). As the director and owner of Health and Balance Counselling in Port Moody, I consult with adult clients (16+) for individual psychotherapy and psychological assessments. I provide online services across the province and the cost of my services are usually covered by extended health insurance.

Therapy approach

While I draw from numerous therapeutic approaches, I specialize in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and aim to develop an empathetic and solid working relationship with my clients. CBT is an evidence-based approach that has been found to be effective in treating a variety of different problems including major depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. In case you are interested, you can click on the link and learn more about some of the research supporting CBT.

However, it's not just about technique: having an effective relationship with any therapist is key to productive change. That is, agreeing on goals and having a trusting working alliance so that problems can be effectively tackled. In addition to therapy, I also provide clinical supervision services for the staff at Health and Balance Counselling. I am also available for psychological assessments (e.g., personality, career/vocational, cognitive) and work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Education, training and experience

I hold a PhD in the area of Clinical Psychology (Concordia University, Montreal) and completed my predoctoral residency at the London Clinical Psychology Residency Consortium (London, Ontario). Additionally, I hold a Master’s and a Bachelor's degree from McGill University and the University of Western Australia, respectively. My research has been mostly in the area of culture and mental health.

Other than being in private practice, I previously held a position as Core Faculty at Adler University in Vancouver, where I taught assessment courses to graduate students. I have also held an academic appointment overseas and maintain research ties at Concordia University in Montreal.

Off-work activities

In my spare time, I enjoy travel, staying fit, listening to music, and having thought-provoking discussions with family and friends.
